What’s the Magic Number?

We were talking to one of our clients the other week when a competitor’s product was mentioned.  It was a rather wordy produce which led someone to say ‘[Product] names are just getting bigger every year, aren’t they?’ To which the general consensus was that this was true.

But is it actually true? It feels right because every time we read a publication we see products with increasingly lengthy names (who knows, you may even have some on your product list!). These products seem to stick in the mind, reinforcing the idea that product names get longer every year.

So it must be true.

Unless we are suffering from confirmation bias of course. Which…well…apparently we are. So take a guess, what’s the most common number of words in a Health & Beauty product? Answers after the link…

What on earth is going on in the chart below?

Royal Count

Since November 2011 we have seen a rise in the number of products that contain the words ‘Wedding’, ‘Royal’ or even two mysterious individuals called ‘Kate’ and ‘Will’. We have tried to engage the data to find out why this was happening, to wed both raw information with marketing intelligence but to no avail.

Still – never mind – the answer might come to us whilst we’re relaxing this coming bank holiday. Or even the unexpected additional Bank Holidays the weekend after.


Nailcare Editorial 2009 vs. 2010

We’ve been having a look at  Nailcare print editorial and thought we’d share with you some of the things we’ve found out.

Overall there was  a big increase in Nailcare editorial in 2010 when compared to 2009, up 43% year on in term of editorial pages. Unsurprisingly nailcare editorial is still dominated by Polish, represents 93% of Nail market

The Top 10 Nailcare brands, which account for 48% of  all nailcare editorial have on average increased their editorial pages by 84%

60 new brands have entered Nailcare editorial in 2010. Of note are Andrea Fulerton (ranked 16th) and Topshop (ranked 26th).

The top publication for Nailcare is More! magazine – although with over 15% coverage given to Nails Inc! there does seem to be a slight bias!

The Real Reason Our Clients Renew

It’s amazing when looking back on the past 5 years to see the high rate of client retention that we have at mymarketmonitor.com.
